12V Outlet for Demco Coachlink Monitor in Motorhome

Updated 09/23/2026 | Published 09/20/2026

Question:

I have a new motorhome on Ford chasis, and does not have a cigarette lighter, I was told that plugs to charge cellphones on the dash would work with an adapter, but I dont get a braking light on the monitor, I do get a power light green. One question is that a 12 volt connection thru that adapter. or something less than 12 volts.

Hi Carl! The green light tells us the Coachlink monitor is getting power, but I wouldn't use the USB charging port and adapter for this. The Coachlink included with the Demco Stay-IN-Play DUO # DM86VR is designed to plug directly into a 12V accessory outlet. I'm guessing it isn't working properly because the power isn't reliable from the USB port.

Since your new motorhome doesn't have one, I recommend installing the Roadmaster 12 Volt Outlet Kit # RM-9332. This will give the monitor the proper 12V power source it was designed to use. If you still don't get the braking indicator after switching to the 12V outlet, we can troubleshoot the CoachLink wiring on the towed vehicle next.

What kind of motorhome do you have?

It's a 2025 Thor 27 HE I brought in June and had never been registered.

@CarlT thanks for the additional information. I'm confident the dedicated 12V outlet # RM-9332 will solve the problem you're experiencing.

I agree with Robin. The RVI dedicated outlet provides a sure 12v and full amperage connection. I had a factory lighter socket and it only worked randomly. I replaced it with a new factory socket and same problem. Then I bought the RVI socket, wired it direct to a fuse block port near the battery and problem solved.

@MarkR thanks for sharing your experience. A dedicated 12V outlet definitely takes the questionable factory power source out of the equation.
