Does a Wheel's Width Matter When Buying a Tire?

Updated 09/16/2026 | Published 09/12/2026

Question:

I guess I have 3 questions about trailer tires and wheels. You list trailer tire widths. But you also list various acceptable wheel widths. Doesnt tire width vary with different wheel widths? Which wheel width is used to determine tire width? When you list acceptable wheel widths for a tire, which wheel width is best to use?

Hey there!

I can definitely see why that would be confusing. Tire width and wheel width get listed separately, but they do affect each other a little bit.

The tire width we list is based on a specific “measuring rim width” used by the tire manufacturer. If that same tire is mounted on a slightly narrower or wider wheel within its approved range, the actual tire width can change a little. A wider wheel can spread the tire out slightly, while a narrower wheel can pull it in a bit.

As for which wheel width is best, there usually isn’t one single correct choice as long as it falls within the tire manufacturer’s approved range. If you have a choice, I generally like to stay somewhere near the middle of that range since that keeps the tire closest to its intended shape.

If you send me the tire size you’re looking at, I’d be happy to help narrow down which wheel width makes the most sense for your trailer.
