How Wide of a Rim is Recommended for the Tire Size ST225/75R15

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 05/29/2011

Question:

I just purchased a new trailer. The tire size is ST225/75R15. The wheels are 5 inches in width. Is this enough rim width?

Expert Reply:

For a wheel that is 5 inches in width and 15 inches in diameter you would want tires that are size ST205/75-15.

For the tire size ST225/75R15 you listed you would want a rim that is from 6-7 inches in width.

I attached a department page that has all of our tires that are that size. I also attached a page on trailer tire sizing that has a chart that show what tire sizes go with the different rim sizes.

Is an 8” GM rally wheel too much for a trans eagle 225/75/15 load range f radial ? Will the rim width compromise the integrity and/or functionality of the tire?

@CliffL well for one this tire isn't rated for use on a vehicle and its for a narrower wheel. It's hard to say exactly how it would perform though.
