Question:
I have been reading some forums that say I cant just install this hitch I also need to upgrade the transmission coolant as well as the button for the trailer in the dash. I will only be towing a boat under 3,000 lbs in and out of the water and drive it twice a year about 100 miles for storage. Are those upgrades necessary or will just the hitch do?

There are a few items I would recommend so that you can tow safely with your 2011 Ford Explorer.
First let's start with a hitch. For that the Draw Tite Hitch part # 76034 would be an excellent choice. I attached an install video for you to check out.
For ball mounts I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a carrying bag.
For trailer wiring you will want the Curt Wiring Harness part # C56093.
Your Explorer has a decent transmission cooler installed, the cooler that the tow package Explorers get is an oil cooler. For that you would want the Derale Plate-Fin Engine Oil Cooler Kit # D15405.
