Can RV AC Unit Install in Enclosed Cargo Trailer

Updated 07/28/2026 | Published 07/22/2026

Question:

Why is it not advisable to install on an enclosed trailer? I have a 24 foot enclosed car trailer and am looking to install an A/C unit on it to cool the inside. My trailer is pre-wired for an A/C unit also. Thank you.

Hey Joe, welcome back! This is a great question but it basically boils down to roof thickness. Enclosed trailers have thinner metal roofs whereas RV's have roofs that are typically between 1.5 inch and 6 inches thick. So if you'd be willing to frame up the ceiling in your trailer you can install an RV AC unit like the Advent Air part # ADV86SR. My Dad did the same in his enclosed motorcycle trailer and somehow the exact same unit has been working for well over 20 years so it would work for you too. Do you have a race car trailer?

Thanks for the reply. It is a race car trailer and I would hope, being that it is pre-wired for an A/C unit, that the manufacturer would have braced the roof for the additional weight.

@JoeH Oh in your case you are totally fine then. I am sure it's framed up properly to allow one to work as-is then
