What Do I Need to Install a 7-way on a 2013 Chevy Express 3500 without a Tow Package?

Updated 07/09/2026 | Published 07/03/2026

Question:

I am in need of a wiring connector for my 2013 Chevy Express 3500. It has what appears to be the factory tow plug. It is flat with 6 receptacles for pins. Do you have a harness or something that will plug into that and run to a 7 way RV blade/4 way flat combination socket?

Hey Samuel,

From what you are describing, it sounds like you have the plugs to add a wiring harness for trailer lights but don't have a tow package. To add trailer wiring and a 7-way to your 2013 Chevy Express 3500, you'll need to use the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 55540 which will plug into that 6-pin plug and other plugs behind the trim panels you were describing and give you a 4-way flat. I've linked a video to this harness being installed on a 2015 Chevy Express so it shoud be similar to your 2013 model. From there, you'll need the Universal Installation Kit for Brake Controllers part # ETBC7. The ETBC7 will plug into your 4-way flat from the Curt wiring harness and includes the necessary wiring to run power and the brake signal back to the included 7-way connector. This will give you a full set up to tow a trailer with brakes and lights that work in sync with your van's.

Do you already have a brake controller for your set up?

My 2022 van did not come w the factory harness. I used the curt T connector for the flat 4 plug. Also spliced into those wires to feed the trailer brake controller. I used the Redarc model that had the 2pc separate controller. It's a simple dial installed on the dash , then the module is installed elsewhere under dash. Instructions were clear and simple to follow. Trailered several different types of trailers with no problem whatsoever.

@TomK Sounds like you went through the exact same install that they'll need to do as well. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
