Is it a Good Idea to Upgrade from 8 inch Trailer Wheel and Tire to 12 inch Wheel and Tire

Updated 06/30/2026 | Published 06/21/2026

Question:

I have a small sailboat Laser trailer that needs tires. Currently the trailer has 480-8 tires on 4 lug wheels. I will be towing approximately 200 miles at highway speeds. Can you please recommend a safe tire/wheel combo? Would it be prudent to upsize to 12?

Hey Mike, if you can fit a larger 12 inch wheel and tire like the part # AM35351DX which is a ST145R12 on a 4 lug wheel this will be your best option as it will have a higher speed rating than what you have now and will also have a higher weight capacity. How much fender clearance do you have now? You will want to have at least 3 inches and this tire will take up 2 more inches than what you have now.

Fender clearance is 3" with the 8" tires so I am guessing I should stick with 8" size? Suggestions for best option in 480-8 size?

@MikeV Yeah unless you had a way to raise up your fenders I would stick with same tire size. In the 4.80-8 tire size like the part # AM10004 which would be your best option.
