Hey Bill, thanks for the information. To add a hitch and tow wiring to your 2024 Subaru Outback Wagon, I recommend the following parts:
Trailer Hitch - etrailer Trailer Hitch item # e25TR
4-Way Wiring Harness - Curt T-Connector item # C56040
Our etrailer Trailer Hitch item # e25TR is custom fit for your Subaru. This is a class III hitch with a 2" receiver that has a 3,500 lbs towing capacity and a 350 lbs maximum tongue weight. It'll work great for your 4" x 8" trailer. I really like this hitch because of the way it installs and how well it blends in. The entire crosstube mounts behind your rear bumper so all you see is the 2" receiver. The matte finish not only offers better rust and scratch protection it's going to blend right in below the rear trim, unlike the glossy finished ones that shine like a flashlight.
The Curt T-Connector item # C56040 is going to plug directly into a factory port in your rear cargo area. You'll also need to ground it nearby with the included self tapping screw. This will add a 4-way connector that controls your trailer's lighting functions. The best part about this harness for your needs is that it can be stored in the rear cargo area and pulled out when needed. You won't have to worry about it hanging below your car.
I linked a couple of installation videos below so you can see how these parts get setup and what they'll look like.
As far as finding an installer and getting costs goes, if you go to the product page of the etrailer Hitch item # e25TR and scroll down below the pics on the left side you'll see a box that says, SCHEDULE AN INSTALLATION. Go ahead and click on it and it will take you to a page where you'll be able to enter your zip code. Once you do this you'll be connected to our network of reputable installers in your area.
If you have any additional questions, go ahead and click on the box that says Add Comment and I'll be happy to answer them.

Even though you think your towing needs are pretty light, I'd definitely recommend a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver. At some point in the future you're going to want to tow something heavier. And a 2" receiver opens up more options for bike racks or other hitch-mount accessories. Both the hitch and wiring harness are pretty easy to install yourself following the instructions.

Hi Bill, I have the hitch and attachments for a trailer light kit that Jerred recommended for your vehicle. I have this hitch installed on my 2022 Subaru Outback. I am very satisfied with this hitch. It works well with small to medium-sized trailers. This hitch will easily handle your 4x8 trailer.

I installed that hitch and wiring harness on my 2025 Outback. At first look it was intimidating to remove the bumper cover to install the hitch, but it actually was quite easy, and the finished product looks and works well.

Self install was actually not bad. I was a bit intimidated by removing the bumper and making the cut myself. But it was so simple with the videos. Probably took less than 2 hours
