Recommendation for 12" Hitch Extension for a 2 1/2" Trailer Hitch

Updated 05/25/2026 | Published 05/20/2026

Question:

I see you have a 2-1/2 to 2 trailer hitch reducer and extender at 7 long but I need one to be 12 long. Is there a reason I cant find one in 12 length to fit straight into my 2-1/2 receiver? The only 12 ones I can find have a 2 stem that requires me to use an adapter/sleeve in my 2-1/2 receiver. Thanks for your help.

Hi Jeff,

For trailer hitch extensions, the longer the extension is away from the hitch the lower the tongue weight capacity gets. Since 2 1/2" hitches are rated for more heavy-duty towing, the extensions are shorter to prevent sway and stress on the truck's frame. If you're wanting to use a 12" extension like the Buyer's Products Hitch Extender w/Step part # 3371804015, you'll need to use a 2 1/2" to 2" hitch adapter. I recommend using the etrailer Magnetic Hitch Receiver Reducer Sleeve for 2 1/2" to 2" Hitches part # e28JR as the magnets will hold the reducer securely in the hitch so it doesn't move when towing. I've included the link to it being installed and used on a Ford F-250 as well so you can see how the adapter works.

What are you planning on towing with the hitch extension?

Claire, thanks for the reply. I already have a 12" hitch extension that requires a reducer to my 2-1/2" hitch like the one you included above with the step. The problem is the "slop" that occurs at the reducer which is why I was trying to find a straight 2-1/2" extender in the 12" length that has a 2" mouth for my e-bike rack. I have an 8' camper on a short bed (6'9") truck so there is an overhang, thus the requirement for an extender. I see you offer a 7" straight 2-1/2" hitch extender but I can't seem to find a full 2-1/2" length one that is 12" long. I'm guessing it must be an engineering thing or perhaps I'm the only person in the world that needs this length?

@JeffR It comes back to the length of extension and how it can decrease the tongue weight up to 50%. Since 2 1/2" hitches are rated for higher tongue weight than 2" hitches, the adapters/extenders are mostly rated for 2" as a safety precaution to keep people from towing more than the set up can handle with that much extension. Have you considered a front mounted hitch for you bike carrier?
