Question:
I am considering HGK819 together with a S86SR swing away hitch adapter for the back of a 2025 Chinook Maverick motorhome. This Class B+ unit has a rear door that opens to the left, and a step that swings down for access. The swing away adapter will have to swing left, since it would block the step if mounted to swing right. My question is simple… will the HGK819 and S86SR work together to swing to the left sufficiently far such that I can open the motorhome door? A short hitch extension may also be needed to allow the latch mechanism of the S86SR to clear the bracket for the step assembly. Would that be a problem? Let me know your thoughts, many thanks.

Hey Michael! The first thing I would do is measure back from the center of your hitch pin hole to the edge of the door when it is open. If it is less than 31" you won't need to worry about the swing away since the GearSpace 34 # HGK819 will clear. The closest part of the box is 10" when retracted and 31" when fully extended. Looking at your pictures, I believe that will be enough to clear the doors and the step and let you comfortably get in and out.
If you want it completely out of the way, the Swagman Swivel Hitch Extender # S86SR will do the job. However, I don't have a good measurement right now to check and see if it will clear the step. I know it is 5-3/16" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the adapter. So maybe another 1/2" out from there.
As it is, this will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50%. The carrier itself weighs 160 lbs so you can only add another 140 lbs of gear before the Swagman is maxed out. Adding in a standard adapter to extend it out further to try to clear the step will reduce the capacity by an unknown amount so I really don't advise doing that.
If you want to get creative, you could use the Gen-Y # 325-GH-303 (this doesn't reduce hitch capacity) which will extend the swing away out enough to clear. Still, this is a lot of parts, and the potential for unwanted movement and a rough ride is high. It also looks like those steps might be too close to add in an anti-rattle on the receiver, which you really want when you start adding in adapters.
What will you be carrying with the GearSpace?

Hello. This is so funny. We have a 2024 chinook Maverick. We use the gear space 34 box on the back. It fits nicely. The rear door swings open all the way when the cargo box is extended on the rails. The door will open part way without the cargo box extended all the way. The key is to keep the rails well lubricated. We didn’t need a swing away adapter. We did have to reinstall the rear steps so they flipped down. which was not a big deal. Anyway I’m on the chinook next generation Facebook site. If you post the question there I will reply and you can then pm me if you have additional questions.
