Can You Use a Load Range F tire with A 5 Lug Wheel?

Question:
Hello Im looking for a 5 lug 15inch x 6 inch trailer wheel to handle a 12 ply tire so it will need a high PSI rating. Can you please recommend something for me. Thank you

Hey Anthony, you’re absolutely on the right track thinking about the wheel along with the tire here because once you get into a 12 ply rated tire (typically load range F) the pressure and load demands go up quite a bit and that’s where mismatches can cause problems.
A solid option in that 5 lug size is something like the Dexstar 15 by 6 steel wheel with a 5 on 4 and a half bolt pattern part # AM20545. It is a reliable, well built wheel and about as strong as you will typically find in that configuration. These wheels are typically used with Load Range C or D tires, not Load Range F. The reason isn’t the physical tire fit, it’s the pressure rating. Most of these wheels have a 2,200 lb capacity and the actual PSI limit is often tied to the valve stem and typical application, which usually lands in that 50 to 65 PSI range.
If your goal is to safely run a 12 ply tire, the more common and dependable route is stepping up to a 6 lug wheel and hub setup, which is designed for higher load capacities and PSI ratings. Do you have already have the tires or are you just looking to upgrade the load range/size?

Great wheels. I have them on a 6x12 utility trailer I redone. Still look new after 2 years. I had them balanced and required very little weights.
