Can 2017 Ram Short Bed Use Gen-Y Offset Gooseneck Ball

Updated 03/04/2026 | Published 03/01/2026

Question:

I have a 2017 Ram crew cab with short bed. Considering using the Gen-y 5” offset for my Reese 20k 3rd gen Goosebox. With this setup, should I be concerned with positioning the load behind the axle, i.e., stability, redistributing weight from front axle to rear?

Hey Pete! It is perfectly acceptable and safe to use the Gen-Y Hitch Gooseneck Trailer Hitch for Dodge Ram OEM Puck Systems - 5" Offset # GY83XR with your 2017 Ram. The 5" offset isn't going to cause you trouble, only help with turning clearance. Your pin weight is still essentially over the axle where it should be.

Companies like Gen-Y take their products and safety seriously, so their offset ball will not negatively impact how your truck carries the load. If you don’t already have safety chain loops installed in your puck system, you will also need the Curt Safety Chain Loops # C60617.

What kind of 5th wheel are you towing?

Thanks for the feedback Robin. I am pulling a 2023 Reflection 337rls. The hitch is a gen3 Reese goosebox 20k.

@Pete that’s a great setup, your 337RLS and 20K Goose Box will work perfectly with the 5" offset.
