Weight Capacity of Step on Benton LittleShift Bike Rack

Updated 03/03/2026 | Published 02/27/2026

Question:

Hi there, I’m curious about the step weight capacity. I found one response that didn’t address the question, and I don’t know any adults who weigh 80 pounds, so I’m wondering what the step is rated for. Thanks, John

Hi John; the step on the Benton LittleShift Bike Rack # B54VR does not have a specific weight rating. It is capable of holding the max tongue weight capacity of your hitch so most adults will be able to use it for sitting/standing. We also have a version that comes with locks # B29VR if you don't want to have to pick them up separately.

What kind of bike are you hauling?

I drive a BMW X5 , I’m 6’2” 200 pounds, no trouble sitting or standing on rack platform/seat. I love this bike rack, very secure, does not wobble or bounce, my bike is very secure and you can’t beat the price! Mounted in minutes . Only issue is that it activates my parking sensors but I over ride that by way of my strings in my car. I highly recommend this product.

I love this rack. It does state 80# weight capacity for the bike. I’m sure the step can handle any and more of that. It’s rock solid. The no rattle pin for the receiver hitch is awesome too. If you’re stupid enough to lose the flat sided pin that comes with it and can’t improvise a different way to mount the hitch, just stay home. This bike rack would be great if it came in a 150lb version? Maybe it does? Then you could carry a UBCO Electric Bike. Regards Kim

Not sure of the weight capacity but I know from experience it exceeds 200#. I love the rack as the price is right but mostly because of the fairly light weight so easy to install and remove. It is sturdy and holds my 80# 4 inch ebike. The only short comming is the hold down straps for the wheels - they are too short. I use facric wrenching straps and would never expect to hold the bike in place with only the wheel staps anyway.
