Video Transcript for Review of etrailer Bike Rack Locks - e88RV

Hi, everyone. Steven here with etrailer.com. Today, we're taking a look together at the Benton Bike Lock Set for 2-Bike Platform Racks or even a 4-Bike Hanging Rack. Now this is gonna be ideal for the Benton 2-Bike Shifts&Grins and Grins Platform Racks, the ShiftShow Hanging Rack, or just any two-inch hitch-mounted bike rack. So you're gonna get the anti-rattle locking hitch pin. That's your standard 5/8-inch hitch pin size as far as the diameter.

The usable length in between here, whenever it's properly installed, is gonna be 2 and 5/8 inches. Now as far as locking around locking, you're gonna have, in this case, four keys that are keyed alike, and you would simply twist the key. So the key is going to double as the lock, but also if you think about it as the tool or the wrench or whatever you wanna call it. So it's gonna be threading into this piece here, and it's got like a bolt in here inside the head of the lock. So once you get this through and you tighten everything down with the lock nut to get the anti-rattle part out of there, then everything's tightened up.

Now you can put your key back on, twist everything in place, and then that would simply lock up tight, pop your dust cover over, and then your bracket is secured to the hitch and the vehicle itself. Now on the cable side here, you got a 10-foot length of cable. Same concept. Twist that key to twist the lock part off. The cable diameter is 5/16 of an inch thick.

All right, so we got that twisted off. Same concept. Now we got the cable here. You would basically put this end of the cable, more or less, through the hitch pin lock here. And then this part would go up and around all the bikes and everything and then loop back through itself, that way no one could take anything, and then same thing.

Simply twist the key to get that lock back on and lock everything down tight, take the key out, and then put your dust cover back on, and you're good to go. Well, folks, that's gonna wrap up our look together at this Benton Bike Lock Set for 2-Bike Platform or 4-Bike Hanging Racks. I'm Steven. Thanks for watching.

The only thing that makes this purchase worth the money is the locking pins for the bike rack and 2-bike add-on, and that just barely. The locking pin for the base rack does nothing to eliminate vertical bounce of this rack, so calling it an anti-rattle hitch lock is very nearly dishonest. It DOES lock, but it's a very awkward locking mechanism. The shaft of the lock is a threaded screw that you turn with the key! And.... wait for it.... you STILL have to fasten the pin with a lockwasher and a nut, meaning that you have to keep an adjustable wrench with you at all times if you need to remove the rack.

The pin that locks the 2-bike extension to the base rack has the same locking mechanism, and you need a STACK of washers if you don't want it sliding back & forth after you install it. There's a lot of play in this pin.

If Benton didn't use their proprietary square-shaped threaded pin to secure the base rack to the vehicle, this purchase would be completely unnecessary.

I gave it 3 stars because it DOES allow you to lock your rack and extension to your vehicle, but that's the best thing I can say for it. The locking mechanism is very poor, the fit of the extension rack pin is poor, and the base rack pin needing to be secured with a lockwasher and nut is pretty close to ridiculous.

  • Can I Use Hitch-Mounted Snowboard Carrier On 2025 Crosstrek With 2" Receiver?
No worries at all, Taylor - that’s a perfect setup. The TowSmart # TS68ZR gives your Crosstrek a 2-inch receiver and solid 675-lb tongue weight rating, so it’ll easily handle a snowboard or ski rack. I’d just recommend a locking hitch pin for security, but it might depend on the carrier you have. If it doesnt use anything proprietary, Id use something like Anti-Rattle Hitch Lock and Cable Lock for 2" hitches # e88RV which comes with an anti rattle lock for the hitch to keep everything...
