Can Spare Tire Be Mounted on Thor Sequence 20L Without Blocking License Plate

Updated 02/20/2026 | Published 02/16/2026

Question:

I have a Thor Sequence 20L. It did not come with a spare tire. RV dealership told me to contact a Dodge Dealership about have a bracket mounted rear driver side door. Dodge told me they cannot assure the integrity of the door with a mount like that. Looked at your Roadmaster Tire Carrier and that would work except the License plate will be blocked by the tire. It is mounted right in the center of the rear drivers side door. Is there a way around this?

Hey Mark! The best way to get around the Roadmaster Spare Tire Mount # RM-195125 blocking your license plate is to relocate it. If you aren't using the receiver on the carrier the Curt # C31002 is the best solution. Depending on your wheel design you might be able to mount it on the spare as well, otherwise you will have to get more creative.

Technically you could try to move the tire mount up with something like the # PH67SR so the plate is visible. However, adding in the extra parts will likely create a lot of unwanted movement back there. You can try to mitigate this with an anti-rattle like # e38FV but you won't be able to completely eliminate it.

Where are you headed next in your Sequence 20L?

E trailer actually sells a license plate holder that attaches to the trailer hitch that is part of the roadmaster tire carrier. Therefore the license plate sits below the tire. Just google” license plate holder that attaches to trailer hitch” and it should pop up.

@Frank good thinking. I was caught up in the thought that the additional receiver would be used to carry something else or tow. The # C31002 is definitely a great solution.

It doesn’t block our Thor. You won’t be able to open the rear doors though. It doesn’t pivot enough to allow access.

Couple of things to consider. I bought this go my Thor Scope 18m. 1. With the tire up, even with receiver extension, you doors will not open. 2. Even with tire down your door may not open. Mine hits the “flair outs” of the tire mount bracket (not the tire). Now on the right door, there is enough “wiggle” in the hitch to get past it. But on the left door, there isn’t. So I hane to take the mount loose and slide it out an inch to get the drivers side door open. Same side as my removable black water can. So just know you may have some work to open your doors fully.

In order to have both doors fully open, I installed a Kuat Pivot 2 between the van and tire rack. It allows me to simply swing the entire tire rack to one side without dropping the tire allowing both doors to open! It’s an additional expense but is extremely convenient to access the rear of the camper!
