Tire Chains for 2026 BMW X5 With 275/45R20 Tires

Updated 11/10/2025 | Published 11/05/2025

Question:

Hi. Im looking for chains for a 2026 BMW X5 to use on 275/45-20 tires. The manual says, The manufacturer recommends the use of fine-link snow chains.inch Are these chains considered to be fine-link snow chains? I note they are not S compatible, which is not called out as recommended by the manufacturer, so Im assuming I dont need that. Also, from what Ive read, the fine-link bit is more about the ride than it is about the clearance, and since my primary use case is not going to be about the ride, fine-link may not be important to me.

Hey Paul! Fine-link and Class S actually go hand in hand. What that is basically saying in the owner's manual is you have limited clearance and you're going to need Class S compatible tire chains so you don't tear up your BMW. This is pretty common for an SUV like the X5. European manufacturers say "fine-link" to describe low profile, and Class S compatibility is the U.S. clearance standard for restricted space vehicles which equates to low profile tire chains.

It doesn't currently show as a fit in our fitguide so they aren't showing up in your search but you can use the Konig Tire Chains # th2004705265 you originally looked at. You can also go with the more premium option of the Konig K-Summit Tire Chains # TH2004565767. These are Class S compatible so you will meet your fine-link requirement and won't have any clearance issues. Both are confirmed to fit the 275/45-20 tires on your 2026 BMW X5.

Robin, thanks for the guidance. I have a follow-up question... My primary use case will be deep snow on a gravel road. I see that the th2004705265 chains are good for deep snow, but the specs say "on road only". The other Konig chains I originally looked at were spec'd as "on and off road". For tire chains, what qualifies as "off road"? Is there any reason that I shouldn't use the th2004705265 chains on snow-over-gravel? Thanks.

@PaulE I would say it isn't a major concern if you're talking about deep snow over gravel but I would still take things slow, ideally a short distance. If it is light snow you're going to end up on that uneven surface of the gravel which is what can cause issues for the chains and wear them out. If you are on light snow and gravel and drive quickly you risk that force picking up some gravel with the chains.
