Upgrading From Standard Lippert Rhino To MORryde Cushioned Gooseneck Hitch 18K GTW

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 10/29/2025

Question:

We’re up-grading from a standard 5th-wheel on our RV with about 18,500 lb weight including cargo, Lippert Rhino box - is MR24MV a good fit? is it overkill?

Shawn - from your description, # MR24MV is just right. At ~18,500 lb GTW and a Lippert Rhino pin-box, the MORryde GooseTech # MR24MV is designed for the heavy end category (18,000+ lb GTW, Lippert Rhino). Overkill isn’t really a concern here - you’re matching the correct category and meeting the required specs. What matters now is ensuring your truck, truck bed, and gooseneck hitch are rated for everything.

If you like, we can discuss the bed/truck pair required so you don’t end up under-spec. Let me know which truck you have and if you do or don't have a gooseneck ball yet!

Appreciate it, Andrew. We’ve got a 2022 RAM 3500 DRW with the factory prep package. I do have the gooseneck ball that came with the truck. Will that work, or do I need something heavier duty?

@Shawn That factory RAM setup is perfect, Shawn; you won’t need to upgrade the ball or hitch. Just make sure the RAM’s OEM ball and chain anchors are rated for your full trailer weight (they’re usually 30K rated from the factory). And since you’re converting to gooseneck, don’t forget the MORryde safety chains # GY49GR. They’re required and will clip right into your RAM’s factory chain loops. You’ll love the smoother, quieter ride the GooseTech gives that big Rhino box.
