Updated 10/02/2025 | Published 09/12/2025

Question:

Im looking into flat towing my 2001 jeep wrangler. I found base plate BX1120 and Tow bar BX4330. I see some drilling is necessary for the base plate. 2 Main questions -Confirm these are correct plates and tow bar for my jeep? -Do I need an adapter, between base plate and tow bar or are these two compatible? On all the pictures I see there is an adapter?

Hi Joseph!

The Blue Ox Base Plate Kit - Fixed Arms # BX1120 will indeed fit your 2001 Jeep Wrangler, but make sure you have either the double tube bumper or the standard factory bumper. This is designed to fit those option.

You will also not need any kind of adapter to attach the Blue Ox Acclaim Non-Binding Tow Bar - Coupler Style for 2" Ball - Car Mount - 5,000 lbs # BX4330. This comes with the safety cables as well, so you don't need to add those on.

Doe you have the rest of the parts needed to flat tow your Jeep? Like wiring and braking system.

Hi Joseph, Did you manage to get all the parts you need to flat tow your Jeep, like the wiring and braking system? I'm asking because your experience could really help others who are setting up their vehicles for flat towing.

@LazerS Im looking into the lighting at the moment. I have a portable set of lights I might use rather than going into the wiring on my jeep. As for brakes Im right at the limit, weight wise, that its required to have braking. I want to tow it first and get a feel for if I will add brakes or not. My base plate was missing some hardware so waiting for that to arrive before I can mount it.

@JosephM Wiring can be a bit of a pain, so I get it. If you do end up deciding to forego a braking system, just make sure to check the sates you are going though to make sure they aren't one of the ones with different rules. California, Nevada, Idaho, and Tennessee have it so a 1,500 pound towed vehicle needs to have a braking system and then New York and North Carolina have it at 1,000 pounds. Most places aren't this ridiculous though. What were you missing? Did we get you taken care of?

@LazerS Still waiting for the missing bolts to mount base plate. I believe Im going to try the wireless light system first. If I dont like it I can use it on other devices. Looks like most of them have combined brake and turn signal. I believe some states require these to be separate as well. I have not checked my RV lights if they are separate or not. As for braking I did know that some states require it at less weight but thanks for that brake down. I think my state is 3000 lbs. Im thinking of going with the Patriot portable unit. I want to give it a tow test first before deciding.
