Question:

I’m purchasing a used gooseneck horse trailer with Dexter torsion axles. I need to have a lift kit installed to on the trailer to level it up better on my tall truck. I want to be sure to purchase the correct kit to provide to my local shop for the installation. Please help me figure this out! Thank you

Hello Leatha,

Happy to make sure we get you the right lift kit.

It all depends on which Dexter torsion axles you have on the horse trailer. If you have Dexter # 12 Torflex axles rated for 5,500 to 7,000 lbs, you’ll need the # K71-725-02. If you have Dexter # 10 Torflex axles rated for 2,300 to 4,000 lbs, you’ll need the # K71-707-02.

If you could please send me the information off your axle tag, I’ll be happy to confirm which kit you need.

What kind of horses do you have? I used to show a little Western as a kid and would love to have my own someday.

Hi, Kate! I have this from the trailer specs: GVWR 7,000lbs with an approx. empty weight 4,300lbs I have this from the original floorplan when the trailer was custom ordered: 3500# axles 22 1/2” up Can you tell me where to find the axle tag? I managed to crawl under the trailer looking for the axle serial #, but it was illegible when I took a photo. I speak “horse”:but not so good with “trailer”. I showed western many decades ago on Quarter Horses. I switched to Arabians, then added Paso Finos. I competed in endurance (on a Paso, not an Arabian, which is unusual) but now just trail ride. I hope you get that horse one day! I was planning to haul the trailer to my local tire/mechanic shop this morning so they could figure it out. If you can advise me before I do that, it might save me at least one round trip. Mostly I just want to get it right the first time! Thank you! Leatha

@LeathaF If you were under the horse trailer once and were able to find the serial number but not the axle tag, there is a good chance it fell off. Since they are rated for 3,500, they are most likely the # 10, so you will need the # K71-707-02. The tag is located on the rear side of the axle beam, near the center (just in case it happens to be there). I know you said the serial number is illegible, but if you rub chalk over the numbers it can help make the difficult-to-read serial number more visible. If you want to give it a shot, I am happy to send that over to Dexter to get an axle read out.

@KateF I was able to squeeze under the trailer and find a serial number that was legible: DEXTER AXLE LN 122981797 I hope this is what you need to match me with the correct kit. Thanks! Leatha

@LeathaF Thanks Leatha! I am going to forward this over to Dexter to get a read out, this normally takes about 2 business days. I will let you know as soon as they get back to me.
