Recommended Bed Extender for Carrying Two Kayaks w/ a Short Bed Truck

Updated 08/15/2025 | Published 07/23/2025

Question:

Im looking for a bed extender to carry two tandem kayaks that are just under 14. My truck bed is 58 so I was looking at either MPG907 or FHG89ZR. Do you have a recommendation of one over the other - or perhaps something different entirely? My other thought was to put a rollbar on the truck and have the extender set upright with the bed closed I have a cushion that I can strap to the top of my truck, but would prefer not to go this route if i can avoid it Thanks

Hey Andrew. The Malone Axis Truck Bed and Roof Load Extender item # MPG907 and the Flint Hill Goods Truck Bed Extender item # FHG89ZR are practically identical. Not sure they would be the best option for 2 kayaks though. They each max out at 48" wide so you'd want to compare this distance to the width of your kayaks at different angles to see if they would fit.

If you run into size issues with the width, I recommend using the Yakima LongArm Truck Bed Load Extender item # Y01149. This also connects to your truck's 2" receiver and has a 300 lbs capacity. The main difference is the crossbar at the end measures 60" wide. When lowered the crossbar sits 48" back from the hitch pin and has three different height settings in addition to the vertical one.

The Crossbar Pad for Yakima LongArm Load Extender - 28" Long - Qty item # Y07417 will protect your kayaks from being scuffed and scrapped up during transport.

What kind of kayaks do you have?
