What bed extender do you suggest? ideally i would like one that can be used with the tailgate down or roof height as I may get a truck cap in the future. thanks

This is going to we a sweet setup on your Tremor Joe!

The Yakima LongArm Truck Bed Load Extender # Y01149 is one of the best options for your setup because of its versatility and adjustability. It’s designed to work in multiple configurations depending on how you’re carrying your kayak now and in the future.

This Yakima Crossbar Pad # Y07417 protects your gear from scrapes and scratches while hauling with the Yakima LongArm.

Height Extension # Y01150 converts your Yakima LongArm load extender into a high-mount load bar for hauling kayaks, a canoe, ladders, or other similarly sized equipment at cab height.

Was there a cap or rack setup you were planning on?

I have the Yakima truck bed extender mentioned above. I purchased from trailer along with arm pads to mount my wife's and my 12 foot kayaks. I cinch the bows to the bed hooks and wrap the hull around the extender arms, snugging down just tight enough with Yakima hull straps to keep them from wobbling or shifting. It a very stable, reliable setup. I've also used the extender for hauling many loads of lumber using similar cinching techniques. Some loads were of 26 foot 2 x 4s. Loads never shifted and the Yakima handled the weight admirably. You'll want to adjust the height using the provided locking pin through the extender tube (along with safety flags at the end of your cargo) to keep the load safely supported. It's so easy to use and stow away when not needed. I just pass it up through my garage rafters, turn it 90 degrees, and let the extender tube hang down.

We have a Ford Ranger that only has a 5'0" bed and we got this to carry our tandem kayak mainly because it's SO much easier to slide the kayak into the bed of the truck than to lift it onto the roof rack of an SUV! It's also useful for carrying 12 foot lumber in a short bed truck. You can angle the arm up one position and then slide the lumber in so that the weight helps keep the load down in the front of the truck bed.

@CharlesB Great setup, we appreciate your response. Thank you for sharing the tip on angling the arm for longer lumber too!
