where are the instructions? Does 1/2 inch make up for the crank that is too short?

Are you looking for installation instructions for a particular trailer vent or for the ceiling garnish, # VA0445-26? Ventline does not offer instructions just for the garnish because it is basically an interior trim piece that slides around the vent screen and screws to the ceiling or vent support.
I have attached an installation video that shows a ceiling garnish and the vent screen, # BVC0573-31, that you purchased. I am not sure what 1/2 inch measurement you are talking about, but we did have to use a 1/2 inch drill bit to relocate the hole for the crank handle. Vent styles change over time, so parts are sometimes slightly different and require modification.
