Hey Marc! Calibration for the Redarc # RED57AR only takes a few miles if in town, maybe a little longer if you aren't making frequent stops as it sometimes takes 15-20 braking applications. It’s fully automatic and uses internal sensors to detect motion and orientation. Once it’s set up, you don’t need to recalibrate unless you remove the unit or change vehicles. We recommend giving it a test squeeze on the override/sway button just to confirm its dialed in each trip.

Jacob from Kentucky said his calibrated on his way out of the campground before he even left the twisty park road. I attached an image from the instructions to show you the exact details that Redarc gives us.

What if I’m switching between two different trailers? one’s a lightweight utility trailer and the other is a 28-foot camper. Do I need to recalibrate every time I swap trailers, or does it remember settings for each?

@Denise Great question, Denise. The Redarc Tow-Pro Link doesn't require a full recalibration when swapping trailers; calibration is vehicle-specific, not trailer-specific. So as long as the controller stays in the same vehicle and hasn't been unplugged or moved, you're good to go. That said, we do recommend adjusting your gain settings in the app each time you switch trailers. Lighter trailers need less braking force, while heavier ones like your 28-foot camper will need more. The good news is the app lets you save presets, so you can quickly switch between them before hitting the road. You can also easily adjust by using the remote in the cab by following this: Press the Minus or Plus Buttons to adjust the braking force between 0 (off) and 10 (maximum). Each press adjusts the Braking Force by 0.5 The current level is displayed by the LEDs As a safety feature, if you reduce the Braking Force below 3, you must test the brakes at the new level within 30 seconds. If you try to reduce the Braking Force below 3 without first applying the brakes, the Braking Force will remain at level 3 Let us know the weight of each trailer and we can help you dial in a solid starting point for both. Safe travels!
