Can I Use a Tow Hitch for Vehicle Recovery if a Car Were to Get Stuck?

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 06/28/2025

Question:

I was just curious if this hitch could also be used to aid in vehicle recovery should that be necessary? Since its bolted to the frame, Im hoping it should work, but I wanted to check. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Hello Ethan,

Yes, the Curt # C13377 Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver can be used for light vehicle recovery, such as towing a stuck vehicle with a strap, provided the force is applied gradually and stays within the hitch's rated capacity. Since it bolts to the frame, it's structurally strong, but it’s not designed for high-force or jerking recoveries like those involving kinetic ropes. For safe use, a hitch-mounted shackle adapter like he Flint Hill Goods Tow Strap Loop for 2" Hitch - 10K # FHG42VR is recommended instead of wrapping straps around the hitch. Avoid snatch recoveries or pulling extremely heavy, stuck loads, as this could damage the hitch or vehicle frame.

What kind of vehicle are you looking to get stuck, and what kind of fun is going to take place while doing so?
