Best Method For Protecting Trailer Hitch From Rust Or Corrosion

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/12/2025

Question:

My hitch was delivered with several scuffs and one spot where coating was chipped off. It was already rusted in that spot. Do you have a method to protect it from further corrosion?

Hello Jeff, thanks for reaching out. The best thing you can do for that is to sand down any rusted areas to remove the rust. Then touch up those areas with a black rust resistant paint. Rustoleum is what I typically use for this and it works great. I did try using black flex seal spray once and it worked fine but it goes on pretty thick. It is generally recommended to check your hitch once a year and touch up any rusted spots. Rocks and road debris will inevitably scratch the hitch.

Hey Jeff, did you have a chance to sand down the rusted areas and apply the rust-resistant paint? I'd love to hear how it worked out for you, as it could give others confidence in maintaining their hitches.

@JesseM I did not. The hitch is mounted and going to be more difficult to do now. I couldn’t wait to repair it before mounting. You should have provided a product to do the job as this was brand new and damaged in transit, due to insufficient securing of the hitch in the box. Keff
