Will ECM on 2025 Ram 1500 Require Programming After Brake Controller Installation

Updated 09/02/2025 | Published 06/28/2025

Question:

I’m trying to find out if I can add an aftermarket electric brake controller to my 2925 RAM 1500, it has the factory hitch and 7 pin plug. Installing the OEM controller requires adding a code to the ECM does the aftermarket controller require the same?

Hey Richard! I would expect to have to take your 2025 Ram 1500 to the dealer to reprogram your ECM for the brake controller to work. We don't have any specific reports one way or another that I'm aware of but, if it is required for the OEM controller the same is likely true for aftermarket. However, I would install it first and test it to see if it works without making the extra trip to the dealer.

The 2025 Ram in particular has been the source of confusion with brake controllers as they continue to make changes to complicate things. If you want the Curt TriFlex then the # C87QV is the correct part number that comes with the wiring harness for plug and play installation.

Hey Richard, did you have a chance to install the brake controller on your 2025 Ram 1500 and see if it worked without needing a trip to the dealer? I'm curious to know how it turned out, as it might help others with similar setups.
