Are there Brakes for a 8" Wheel?

Updated 09/09/2025 | Published 06/11/2025

Question:

Know any vendors that sell electric trailer brakes for 1.5 inch 1,500 lb axles, or 8 wheels? For towing behind compact car, brakes recommended, and looks like all the light duty trailers have 1500 lb rather than 2000 lb axles. Or maybe small wheels, 230 lb trailer, keeping loads 800 lbs or less renders benefits of brakes marginal?

Sorry I do not know of anyone who makes brakes small enough to use on a 8" wheel. The smallest ones we carry are the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 2K Axles - 7" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2 - L44649 - Pre-Greased item # AKHD-545-2-2K. They measure 7-5/8" diameter x 2-7/16" wide and work with wheels as small as 10".

I would say the lack of brakes for trailer's and wheels that small has to do with them not being legally required in the majority of the country.

Hey, did you find a solution for your trailer brake needs? I'm asking because your experience could help others who are towing with a compact car.

@JerredH I bought a 185 lb Ultra Tow 4 x 8 aluminum now on sale for $849. Plan to keep the gross loads under 1,000 lbs, and skip the brakes.
