Flat Tow Setup for 2023 Thor Chateau Towing 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Updated 05/08/2025 | Published 05/02/2025

Question:

I have 2023 Thor Chateau 31foot Motorhome with a 8000 lb hitch and a 7 pin plug, and a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I want your recommendations for flat towing. I need all the items and not a big fan of wire mess between vehicles, and would rather not cut into the jeep wiring if possible can if I have to will one of the plug and play wiring harness work? I have a Even Brake system I picked up for braking. What about charging the battery?

Hey Karry! To flat tow your 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee you will need a tow bar, base plate kit, safety cables, wiring, and a supplemental brake system (which you already have). I recommend the following:

-etrailer Invisible Base Plate Kit - Removable Arms # e98950

-etrailer XHD Non-Binding Tow Bar # e94ZR (includes safety cables)

-Blue Ox Tow Bar Wiring Kit # BLU86XR (if you're really set on plug and play)

OR

-Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-15267

-Roadmaster Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751449 (this is required for the Roadmaster Even Brake # RM-9400)

The Roadmaster wiring kit does require splicing but it is not as difficult as it seems. It is also our go to for wiring around here. It is a great kit and it is reliable. As far as the battery is concerned, you won't drain the battery while flat towing so a charge line kit # RM-156-25 isn't necessary. If you need anything else let me know.

Robin: going to order the e98950, e94ZR, BLU86XR. On the wiring how does it go from the Motorhome 7 pin plug to the 4 pin wiring on the Blue Ox -BLU86XR. Do I need a 6 pin mounted system?, how does it go from 7 pin to a 6 Pin to a 4 pin ?? Do I need the Road master Stop light switch with the Blue Ox BLU86XR Wiring harness or is that only with the Roadmaster Diode wiring kit? Karry

@Karryk you can use an adapter cable like the # C57271. A lot of people do cut off the 4-way and add a 6-way using # DM9523054 which is required if you need a charge line. The stoplight switch kit # RM-751449 is separate from the wiring and required for the brake system.
