Hello John,
Good news, you can simply replace the spring bars rather than buying an entirely new system! You’ll want the Replacement Spring Bars for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems - Qty 2 - 1,400 lbs TW # EQ90-01-1499.
As for whether you should replace them, it depends on your loaded tongue weight. For your weight distribution system to work at its best, the spring bars should match your loaded tongue weight, not the overall trailer weight. Tongue weight is typically about 10–15% of your total trailer weight.
For example, if your trailer is fully loaded at 10,800 lbs and your tongue weight is around 15%, that would put you at about 1,620 lbs. In that case, you would definitely want to upgrade to the 1,400-lb spring bars.
To get an exact tongue weight reading, I recommend using the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale w/ Storage Bag for Trailers - 2,000 lbs # BTBRV44FR while your camper is loaded for a trip. This will give you the most accurate measurement.
Getting things all geared up for an upcoming trip? If so, where are you headed?
