Hello Brian,

In my research, I’ve found that the Atwood AC-1511 is a ducted air conditioner, rated at 15,000 BTU, and includes a built-in heat pump. I’ve put together a solid upgrade option for you, though it’s not a direct plug-and-play replacement, mainly because your current Atwood thermostat is not compatible with newer units.

I recommend replacing your Atwood AC-1511 with the Dometic Penguin II High Capacity RV Air Conditioner with Heat Pump – 15,000 BTU # DMC68ZR. This is a high-performing rooftop unit with a sleek, low-profile design that improves aerodynamics while delivering excellent cooling and heating efficiency. Its built-in heat pump is ideal for keeping comfortable in a variety of climates, and the 15,000 BTU output matches what you're used to with the Atwood.

Since Dometic and Atwood use different control systems, your existing thermostat will not work with the Penguin II. To ensure full compatibility and functionality, you'll need the Dometic CT Single Zone Thermostat – White # DMC83ZR, which also includes the required control board. This combination gives you reliable control over both the cooling and heat pump features.

The Penguin II # DMC68ZR is built for ducted systems, so as long as your RV already has a ducted layout with vents and a standard 14"x14" roof opening, it should integrate well. If your current setup doesn’t use a ceiling-mounted air distribution box (ADB) and instead vents directly through ductwork, that’s perfectly fine for this model.

Please let me know if you have an Air Distribution Box or if your setup is strictly ducted through the ceiling vents, just to confirm the final details.

Also worth noting: Atwood is no longer in business, which is why a direct replacement for your AC-1511 isn't available. Their product line was absorbed by Dometic, who now handles replacement options and parts.

So what do you think about this set-up?

Hey Brian, Did you decide to go with the Dometic Penguin II and the CT Thermostat for your setup? I'm curious to know how it worked out for you, as your experience could really help others facing a similar situation.
