Recommended Solution for Shackle Bolts That are Backing Themselves Out

Updated 11/03/2025 | Published 01/15/2025

Question:

I replaced the shackle bolts on my 2 axel 16 ft v nose and I used the knurled bolts that are required from a local trailer store. I tightened them unit the knurled end pulled all the way in but if I backed the nut off slightly, the nut would be able to spin freely and I could see it spinning all the way off over time. I’m using the correct nuts with the 3 marks on one end. But they just do not seem to be locking, is there a specific torque spec that they need to be tightened to, I do not want to leave them too loose

Mark, there is no torque specs unfortunately. You're just going to want to make sure that the bolts are long enough, so that when they're installed you have at least 2 threads peeking out of the nut.

You could also use some blue Locktite, # LT37614, which isn't as permanent as the red Locktite but will (hopefully) keep the bolts from backing out.

Hey Mark, did the blue Loctite help keep your shackle bolts from backing out on your trailer? Your results could really help others dealing with the same issue.
