What Holds Nut of Shackle Bolt With Lock Nut in Place

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 09/06/2024

Question:

Hello, I have a basic question. On Part Number: 166081, a 3inch shackle bolt with lock nut, exactly how does the nut stay tightened? I have watched your videos on changing leaf springs. In the video they say to tightened the shackle nut, then back it off a quarter of a turn. Probably a stupid question, but after backing the nut off, what prevents the nut from possibly vibrating loose eventually? There is no Loc-Tite, lock washer, or jam nut mentioned, so, is the lock nut made specifically to resist vibrating loose?

Hey Jeff, this is a great question but the nut that comes with the Shackle Bolt part # 166081 is a lock nut that has nylock in it which holds the nut in place although it is not technically torqued down super tight.

Hey Jeff, did the nylock feature on that shackle bolt hold the nut in place the way you expected? Knowing how it performed could help others wondering about vibration issues on similar setups.
