Is Aftermarket Roof Rack Needed for the Inno Box 320 Rooftop Cargo Box on a 2012 Nissan Xterra

Updated 11/04/2025 | Published 01/03/2025

Question:

Will this fit on my 2012 Nissan Xterra S using the standard Xterra cross bars above the wet-box, or will I need raised cross-bars to make it fit above? Thank you!

Hey Jonathan! (Great name by the way!)

The Inno Box 320 Rooftop Cargo Box # IN94FR fits on crossbars measuring up to 3-1/2" wide x 1-3/8" tall and then spaced 24" - 39" apart (see attached photo). I don't have the specs for the bars on your 2012 Nissan Xterra, but I believe they're taller than 1-3/8" so we'll need to get you some aftermarket bars in order to carry this cargo box.

Check the dimensions and spacing of your crossbars, and if your OEM setup doesn't work for this box then I recommend replacing it with the Inno Aero Roof Rack for Raised Rails # IN82YV to mount the roof box on your Xterra.

Hey Jonathan, what ended up working with the Inno Box 320 on your Xterra’s crossbars? Did the factory setup fit, or did you go with the Inno Aero roof rack? Your update could make it easier for the next person with the same setup.

@JonG the Inno fit perfectly on the bars. However, It does not clear the factory “wet-box” at the front of the roof. You can place in Inno box just behind the factory wet box, with an overhang of a few inches out the back. This is easy to do and grant look too bad. However, if you want it to fit without any overhang out the back, the Xterra “wet box” can be replaced with the standard Xterra roof rack trim piece , which sits farther forward on the roof – allowing for more length and clearance for the inno box (Nissan trim part #73163-ZS50A). I trimmed a little bit off of this plastic piece to allow it to fit a little better. The box now fits perfectly centered, nice and low, and leaves plenty of clearance driving into my garage with a lift on my Xterra. I think the aerodynamics are better with this solution, rather than a rack - which would make it sit higher.
