Can Tow Hooks Be Replaced With Tow Bar Brackets Instead of Base Plate for 1998 Ford Ranger

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/16/2024

Question:

Hello, I recently bought a 1998 ford ranger with the intention of flat towing it behind my RV. It has tow hooks bolted into a crossmember thats connected to the frame. I was wondering if you think itd be possible to replace those tow hooks with brackets for the tow bars, or if Id need an entire baseplate. Thank you.

Hi Adam; depending on the exact design, surface, and spacing you may be able to use the Blue Ox Heavy-Duty Universal Bolt-On Base Plate Brackets # BX88266. However, this usually requires some modification at an additional cost. I recommend sticking with a base plate kit designed for your 1998 Ford Ranger like the # BX2170

Hey Adam, how did things work out with the Blue Ox base plate kit for your Ranger? Your update could make it easier for the next person trying to set up their truck for flat towing.
