Replacement Landing Gear for 1998 Carriage Carri-Lite RK 732

Updated 10/28/2024 | Published 10/24/2024

Question:

Replacing the landing jacks on my 1998 Carriage Cari-Lite RK 732. It has the original landing jacks but are totally obsolete as far as replacement parts. Looking at the Stromberg Carlson LT-3 and the Bulldog 10K as a replacement. Which would a better choice for my wide body Carriage Cari-Lite fiber? The trailer has a GVWR just shy of 15,000.

Hi James; the better option would be the Bulldog # BD500162 you were looking at. You can add the Motor and Switch Kit for Stromberg Carlson Landing Gear # LG-217884 to the Bulldog which will give it the same functionality as the # LG-4 while saving you some money. If you want a crank handle to go with it you can use the # BD500203.

The distance between the mounting brackets (underside of top bracket to top of lower bracket as shown in the diagram) is 17-1/2 inches. If this matches what you have now you can use your existing brackets. Otherwise you will need to cut those off and weld on new ones to match this measurement.

My unit is only 15 1/8" between the stops, top of the bottom and bottom of the top, as indicated by your 17 1/2" measurement listed in red. If I measure from the top of the welded stop to the top of the other welded stop my measurement is 17 1/4". I guess your jacks will not work without a ton of modifications.

@James take a look at the # RVLG-8HDL. I don't know if your measurements are precise or general but the distance from the bottom of the upper weld stop to the top of the lower weld stop is 15-1/2" and from top of the upper to bottom of the lower is 17-1/2". This is more in-line with what you measured. If you take a look at the product page you will see it on a diagram. A motor can be added with # LC142178. The only thing you have to do with different bracket measurements is weld on the new brackets that come with the legs. It isn't always the case, but generally older trailers don't have an exact match for parts. Trailer parts get swapped out on same model trailers within the same year so trying to match something from 26 years ago can be difficult.

@RobinH Robin, thanks working with me. My measurements in the last message are pretty precise. The jacks are easy to measure and I used a tape measure not dead reckoning. If it helps I found the manufacturer of the jacks in the trailer literature that came with the trailer when purchased. I'm the original owner of this old but very fine rig. The manufacturer is RBW Industries, inc. model number LG-151/152/153/154. I'm not sure but I think it's actually a RBW LG-151/152 for left and right legs respectfully. DO you have a dimensional drawing of the landing jacks that show all the measurements of the replacement jack?

@James we typically don't have full dimensional drawings just the measurements that matter. Distance between the weld stops, extended and retracted leg height, outer tube length, and lift should be on most of the jacks. Capacity and weld stop measurement are usually enough assuming you can match that up. RBW LG-151/152 sounds right but also means we don't have an exact replacement. If you're going to weld on new brackets I would get the landing gear with the 15-1/2" inside and 17-1/2" outside measurement since that is pretty standard.
