Hey Tom, thanks for reaching out!
The Thule EasyFold XT Bike Rack # TH903202 will fit directly to a 1-1/4" hitch receiver without an adapter.
The adapter that comes with the bike rack is for fitting the rack into a larger 2" hitch receiver. So, you'll leave the adapter off for a 1-1/4" receiver, but you'll install it back on the rack for a 2" receiver.
