Is The Mounting Hardware For The Optronics LED Clearance Light # MCL95AB Rated For Salt Water

Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/18/2024

Question:

Is the connecting hardware salt water corrosion resistant stainless? Ive had issues where the light itself works fine in salt water but the stud and nut corrode badly in salt water to the point you have to cut them off to replace. If this light isnt salt water compatible can you recommend one that is?

Hi Kurt,

I reached out to Optronics to see what kind of hardware is included with the Optronics LED Clearance or Side Marker Light # MCL95AB, but they unfortunately could not tell me. I took one apart in our warehouse and the bolt looks to be just a zinc coated/plated bolt with a silicon bronze lock washer and nut.

For salt water applications grade 316 stainless steel, silicon bronze and aluminum are going to be the most resilient materials. There isn't another clearance light available with salt water-rated hardware listed so I recommend just replacing the original hardware by removing the two screws that hold the light to the stainless steel base and popping out the bolt. The bolt used is 1/4-20 x 3/4" and you should be able to find this at your local hardware store.

Hey Kurt, how did things go after swapping in the stainless or silicon bronze hardware for your Optronics light? It’d be great to know if that held up better in salt water. Your update could make it easier for the next person dealing with corrosion issues.
