How to Determine if Trailer is Loaded Correctly
Updated 01/19/2026 | Published 08/08/2024 >
Question:
Hello there. I recently got a utility trailer I plan to use for various purposes and I'm worried about making sure it is loaded correctly so it is safe and rides well without swaying all over. Do you have anything that can help me do this?

Hi Don; a scale like the BTBRV Tongue Weight Scale # BTBRV44FR can help you with this. When loading a trailer you want the tongue weight of your setup to be between 10% and 15% of your total trailer weight. This will give you the best ride quality and help prevent any swaying from it being improperly loaded.
You can use the scale to measure your dry tongue weight and then factor in the weight of anything you're carrying to find the 10-15% mark once it is loaded. This scale has a 2,000 lb capacity which should be more than enough, and adjusts from 14-1/2" - 20-1/2" in 2" increments. It also comes with a storage bag and a limited lifetime warranty.

Hey Don, how did things go using the tongue weight scale with your utility trailer? Did it help you get the load balanced and cut down on sway? Your update could make it easier for others working on the same setup.
