Changing Tire/Wheel From 10 Inch To 13 Inch On Trailer With Raised Suspension
Updated 05/07/2014 | Published 05/06/2014 >
Question:
I currently have 4 bolt, Towmaster 20.5 X 8.0 - 10 tires and rims. I am doing a block lift to raise the suspension and increase the ground clearance. I would like to go to a 13, 14, or 15 inch tire and stay with the same width to prevent width alterations to the trailer. I am prepared for possible diameter alterations that may occur due to the larger tires. I need a min. of 1,300+ load capacity. Which 4 bolt rims and tires do you recommend the largest possible is the goal. I hope to add a 8 inch block, and larger tires to achieve a 12 inch+ raise for ground clearance.

The tires you currently have would measure approximately 20-1/2 inches tall. For a tire/wheel combination that would be taller but still have the 4-bolt pattern I recommend a tire/wheel combination like the Loadstar ST175/80D13, part # AM3S120. This tire wheel is a load range C combo and has a capacity of 1360 lbs at 50 psi. The outer diameter of this combo is 24.1 inches, so this will give you about 3-1/2 inches more height with no added width.
You should be aware that raising the trailer will change the physics of the trailer and you will want to use caution when towing to make sure the load remains stable. I have attached a helpful article that explains tire sizing.
