Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A good alternative to 20.5 x 8-10 tires

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel for Tire Size 20.5 x 8.0 -10 For Use as Spare on Boat Trailer
For your tire size of 20.5 x 8.0 -10 we have the part # AM3H400 which is mounted on a 5 lug wheel and is galvanized. This would work great on your boat trailer as a spare setup.

  • Can a 20.5x8x10 Tire Replace a 20x8.5x10 Tire
Hey Thomas, thanks for reaching out! You can definitely replace a 20x8.5x10 tire with a 20.5x8x10 tire, but I actually recommend using a 205/65-10 tire instead because it's a more common size and has replaced the older 20.5x8x10 size. I recommend going with the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 205/65-10 - Load Range E # AM1HP56 because it has a 1,650 lbs at 90 psi weight rating along with an 87 mph rating which makes it the best option for this size tire. If you're needing to replace...

  • Will The etrailer Hub AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K Fit A 10 Inch Wheel?
Hi Ryan! The reason the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range E # AM3H480 will not fit the etrailer Easy Grease Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3.5K Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 - Galvanized # AKIHUB-545-35-G-EZ-K is going to be due to the size of the outside of the hub. If you look at the picture I have attached, you will see it compared to the # AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K, which will fit a 10" wheel. However, the # AKIHUB-545-2-G-EZ-2K is rated for a 2,000...

  • High Speed Rated Trailer Tire in Size 205/65-10
If you can't find a speed rating on a tire it's a safe assumption it's limited to 65 mph as that was once the standard speed limit for trailer tires. The Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H480 that you referenced is rated for up to 87 mph though so this would be a great higher speed option for your trailer.

  • Replacement Tire and Wheel Combo Recommendation for a Subcompact Tractor 18x8.50-10 Tires
Hey Mort, thanks for reaching out! Your 18x8.50-10 size is an older tire size so while we don't have any exact replacements, we do have the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel # AM3H480 that can potentially work. This tire is 2-1/2" taller than your current tire, it has a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern, and has a Load Range E (1,650 lbs at 90 psi) wight rating. As long as the bolt pattern and weight rating are good for your tractor then this will work great for you!

  • What Is The Torque Spec For Lug Nuts On A Trailer With 10" Wheels
Hello Dave, thanks for reaching out. The torque spec is mostly determined by the wheel stud size and the wheel size. Since your wheels are 10" they are likely 1/2" studs meaning the torque spec is 75-85 ft lbs, but please do confirm your stud size. I have included the lug nut torque chart below for your reference.

Hey Eric, the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 # AM3H480 that you referenced was designed to be used with 1/2-20 lug nuts which is a standard size so for that I would recommend the stainless steel part # LHLR103 as it won't rust or swell up.

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Upgrade From 215/60-8 Tires
In your case I do recommend going with the larger 205/65-10 tire size for a few reasons; you'll have a higher load rating and you'll have a higher speed rating. I will say it's important to make sure you have the tires filled to the proper psi rating on the sidewall of the tire. The photo you sent in looks like you have the tires overinflated which is why you're seeing that wear in the middle of the tread. The Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 205/65-10 # AM1HP56 has a load range of E...

  • Tire and Wheel Recommendation To Replace 20.5x8x10 Trailer Tires and Wheels
For the 20.5x8x10, the new size is a 205/65-10. This would be the better tire for the long drives you plan on because it is a wider tire that will offer more stability. You can also get higher load capacities with the wider tire in this case if needed. I recommend the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1HP56, for just a tire. This tire has a load capacity of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi. It is designed to fit on 10 by 6 inch rims. Trailer tires should be inflated to their maximum psi rating...

  • What PSI For Loadstar 20.5x8x10 Trailer Tires
It sounds like you have a Loadstar 205/65-10 trailer tire like part # AM3H480 which always needs to be inflated to the max PSI according to Loadstar. You want to inflate to the max psi to give you the rated load capacity as well as the best traction. Not running the tires at max PSI can cause your tires to overheat which is the leading cause of failure. The only tire manufacturer that allows for lower PSI with lighter loads is Goodyear at this time. I also recommend to make sure the tire...

  • Why Is Kenda 205/65-10 Wheel And Tire Combination AM3H480 Not Recommended For Boat Trailers?
The reason the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range E # AM3H480 you were looking at calls out not being ideal for a boat trailer is due to the wheel, not the tire. The included wheel is powder coated steel which can chip and rust when being submerged in water, and is not ideal for boat trailers as they are constantly in water. You'd have to go with a next larger trailer tire size of 205/65-10 to get at least a capacity of 1,500 lb per tire. For that we have the part # AM3H480 for if you need a 5 lug bolt pattern or # AM3H460 for if you have a 4 lug bolt pattern. The overall size of this will be 8.4 inches wide and 20.4 inches in diameter. This will be noticeable larger than what you have so you'll want to measure first for clearance.

This bias ply tire is mounted to a white wheel that features a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. This is a Load Range E tire that has a maximum load of 1,650 pounds at 90 psi.
