  • Determining If Open Eyed Slipper Leaf Spring Is Needing Replaced
    Your trailer uses an open eye leaf spring like # e24SR. Over time as the leaf spring softens the gap you are seeing will get bigger. As long as the leaf spring is not falling off the hanger when you raise the trailer weight off the axle they do not need replaced unless visibly damaged. Since the overall length of the spring changes as the spring wears I recommend measuring the length of your spring on the radius of the spring(see image).     The only open eye 1-3/4" wide leaf springs we currently carry is the etrailer # e24SR & # e33SR. I have no way to verify the weight capacity for your current springs but as it is only a 2" square axle this spring is likely much heavier than you will need. We do have the U-Bolt Kit # CE23103 for your axle which includes 4 u-bolts, 2 plates and 8 washers and nuts. Then you will need 2 of the Hanger Bolts # TRFA73Z916DLNZ for the leaf springs.

    Hello Paul, great question. The shackle bolts cannot be tightened too much. There is no torque rating for these bolts because tightening them too much can cause the suspension to bind up. The nuts are to be tightened until the knurled portion of the bolt pulls completely into the shackle strap and the bolt head is ran all the way down to the shackle strap and you have at least 2 threads extending past the face of the nut.

    Hey Caleb, unfortunately you can't use slipper springs with a radius end like the 3-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Radius End for 1,500-lb Trailer Axles # e99SR because the brackets are different. You could use open eye springs like # e24SR to replace your hook end springs but I'd recommend making sure the new open eye springs have the same load capacity and dimensions as the old hook end springs.     Hi Alan; you definitely want to replace those leaf springs. If they have flattened out that means they're worn out and ready to be replaced anyway. Rubbing on the frame like that could also cause other problems. New springs will keep it from pushing up into there since they will have their arch back, pulling the open end down where it should be.     On a slipper spring with a flat end like you have it is normal for the end of the spring to rub on the frame/spring hanger. With the style mount you have it makes me think you original springs were Open Ended # e24SR. This would help to explain the sleeve you have on the bolt as well as the spring would have rolled on the sleeve. The original spring was likely damaged and since they probably were not able to find the correct size they just went with what they could make work.
