Question:

I want to convert the surge brakes to electric on my pop-up camper. It also has tandem axles if that makes any difference. The hub part currently on my trailer is 8-276 and I want to use electric brake Dexter #23-47/48 or TruRyde #TRBK-7E-01. I know you recommend hub #8-173 but is there any reason that I cant use my existing hub? If I can use it, are there any modifications such as shimming, needed to make up the 1/2inch difference? By using my existing hub it will save me over $250. Thanks for your help, you have a great website!

Hub and drum assembly # 8-276-5 is not a proper fit for 7 x 1-1/4 inch brake assemblies and should not be used with them. I know you are looking to save some money but believe me, you can spend a little now on the correct hub and drum assembly, # 8-173-16UC3, or a lot later after the additional length of the hub stress the bearings and spindles and you are looking at replacing the axles.
