Troubleshooting Screws in Roof Rack Not Tightening or Loosening

Updated 07/28/2025 | Published 07/28/2023

Question:

The screw used to tighten the rack and secure it to the car won’t tighten or lossen. This is the case with both of my foot pads. Any ideas on how to get this unstuck.

It sounds like you may have some sort of corrosion or substance which has caused the bolts inside your feet to seize. You can try using some penetrating oil to free the bolts otherwise you may have to replace your feet along with the fit kit for your vehicle.

The inside nut closest to the tightening knob seems to have come loose on mine rack and I can’t get the know to tighten or loosen the rail clamp. Any suggestions?

@Jameswh0 Sounds like the nut inside your Thule Rapid Traverse foot # TH480R (the one behind the knob) has come loose. When that happens, the knob just spins and can’t tighten or loosen the clamp. Annoying, but fixable! Try removing the foot from the crossbar and flipping it over. Look where the knob goes in, there should be a metal nut inside. If it slipped out of place, use a small screwdriver to push it back into its slot while gently turning the knob. That can help it re-engage. If that doesn’t work, you might need to carefully open the foot pack by removing any small screws or popping off a cover. That’ll let you reach the nut and reset it. Just be gentle so nothing cracks. Let me know how it works out James.....wh0
