Parts Needed To Add Electric Drum Brakes To A Trailer
Question:
Hello, I have a trailer that I want to add electric breaks to. It has flanges. I have a 2018 Silverado 1500. The trail has a flat 4 plug. Can you recommend the wire kit and plug that I need?

To determine the correct brakes for your trailer we'll need to first know the axle capacity. The Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-26-27 you were looking at are designed for 3,500lb axles. From there you'll need a hub/drum assembly, which will require knowing your bearing and grease seal numbers and your wheel's bolt pattern. If you can't read the numbers on your bearings and grease seal then you can measure the spindle at points B, C, and D to get the inner diameter so that we can verify the correct fit.
If you had a 3,500lb axle with a 5 on 4-1/2 wheel bolt pattern then you could use a hub/drum kit like the Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3.5K Axles - Pre-Greased # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K. This kit would come with the bearings and grease seal and would already have the bearings packed for you.
From there you'd need to install a 7-way and junction box on the trailer. You can get both of these together with part # e99011. I would just cut off the 4-pole wiring where you set the junction box and save the rest of the cable in case you need some extra later on. The wiring functions for this cable are as follows:
Black: 12 volt power
Yellow: auxiliary or reverse signal
Red: left brake and turn signal
Green: running lights
Brown: right brake and turn signal
Blue: trailer brakes
From there you'll need to run 10 gauge wire # 10-1-1 from the junction trailer brake terminal to the brake assemblies. You'll also need to install a breakaway battery like the Bright Way Push-to-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 3802308. You'll also need a trailer brake controller in the Silverado in order to send the signal to the brake assemblies. I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR along with the Redarc Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness for Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers # 331-TPH-010. I have this brake controller in my Silverado and love how easy it was to install and use.
