What Is Needed To Swap From A 120v Fridge To A 12v Fridge In An RV

Updated 01/17/2023 | Published 01/16/2023

Question:

My 5th wheel camper is a 2020 Rockwood Ultra Lite. I want to replace my Dometic 120V/LPG frig/freezer with a 12V Electric unit. What is the general procedure for changes in wiring to support the 12V electric unit?

You won't be able to use the 120v outlet that you already have for your Dometic refrigerator and will have to run new lines to your DC distribution panel or directly to the battery. The Furrion Arctic RV Refrigerator with Freezer # FR42SR has easy hook ups on the back of the unit where you can push the wires into the corresponding terminals and tighten down the screws to secure them.

I recommend running some # 10-2-1 from the unit to your DC panel to the unit for the positive and negative terminals. You can also run another 10awg wire down from the unit to the trailer chassis for the ground. We've found with other 12v fridges that running the ground to the chassis instead of to a distribution panel ground bar gives a better ground and prevent a lot of other performance issues.

You'll need a 15 amp fuse for the port you hook into when wiring into the DC distribution panel. If you run it directly to the battery you'll also need an inline fuse holder # SWC9538.

The hardest part is going to be just sneaking the wire through the walls, hopefully you luck out and the battery or panel is super close and you can easily work your way over. If you have any other questions let me know and I can help.
