Plug and Play Trailer Wiring Options for 2005 Jeep Liberty W/O Tow Package

Updated 12/18/2013 | Published 12/17/2013

Question:

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty without the factory tow package that I am adding a hitch to. I need to add 4 pole trailer wiring. Do you have a product that doesnt require wire splicing? If not, which product do you recommend? Thanks

We do indeed have two plug and play trailer wiring harness options for your 2005 Jeep Liberty. If your trailer has minimal lighting- just a stop/turn/tail light for the passenger and drivers side, the Curt # C55382 would be an excellent choice. This harness has a simple installation, which would plug inline with the connectors on the back of the taillight assemblies. If your trailer has more extensive lighting, say what is mentioned above plus some clearance and/or marker lights on the sides, using the higher capacity modulite, part # 118524 would be advised.

The # 118524 powered modulite gets the signals that the various lighting functions are activated from its connection inline with the wiring harnesses feeding the taillights, but it draws the actual power directly from the vehicle battery, instead of pulling it through the vehicle wiring like the Curt harness. The fact that a separate wire will need to be ran under the vehicle from the rear to the battery will add some complexity to the installation, but no actual splicing into existing wiring will need to be done. I prefer this harness because it provides a more reliable electrical connection directly from the battery.

I have linked you to installation instructions for both wiring harnesses, as well as to an install video for the powered modulite. I have also linked you to an FAQ article that shows several strategies for routing the power wire from the rear of the vehicle to the battery.
