Spare Wheel and Tire For a Stock Trailer With 225/75R15 Tires and a 5 on 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern

Published 11/22/2022

Question:

I am looking for a spare rim and tire for an older Keifer built stock trailer, tandem axle, single wheel each side of axle 4 rims/tires total on trailer. The tire on the rim is a 225/75r15. I took the rim off and measured it. When I measured the diameter I came up with 14-1/4 but my understanding is this tire size is for a 15 inch rim... is a 15 inch rim actually correct? Because I can’t find any rims for that tire size with a 14-1/4 diameter Second question. The width of the current rims on the trailer 6-1/2 inches with 5 bolts on 4-1/2. All the 15 inch rims I am seeing available are 5 bolts in on 4-1/2 but are only 6 inches wide. Would these be compatible even though the are 1/2 inch narrower?

If you have a 225/75R15 tire mounted on your trailer wheels and they hold air the wheel is going to be a 15" wheel. It is very difficult to measure the wheel diameter accurately as the measurement is take for the bead seat area where the tire mounts. The best way to verify your wheel size is by checking for the stamped size inside the wheel itself. The width is also measured to the bead seat width.

As you are looking for a spare wheel and tire I recommend choosing either the Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire with 15" White Wheel in a Load Range C # AM32459 (2,150lbs) or Load Range D # AM32545 (2,540lbs) to match your current tires. Both wheels have the 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern to match your trailer.

Be sure to use an Adco Spare Tire Cover # 290-1755 if the spare tire is going to be mounted outside the trailer. This will protect the tire from UV damage.
