Can You Use a 2" Hitch Extender When Towing to Let Tailgate Down
Updated 08/08/2022 | Published 08/04/2022 >
Question:
I have a Rivian R1T electric truck. I also have a brand new Forest River Rockwood 2318G pop up camper that weighs 2600 dry, maybe 3500 lb with water and belongings. My issue is Id like to extend the hitch by 24 so I can put the tailgate down with the pop-up attached. Is this practical to do and if so what equipment would I need?

We do offer hitch extenders which can be used for towing but the big thing to keep in mind when using such adapters is capacity, as they reduce this by 50%. The longest extender we offer for standard applications is 18" like the Trailer Hitch Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers part # e48YR. The capacity of the adapter is 3,500 lbs or 50% of the hitch's weight capacity, whichever is lower.
