Great question!
The Curt Echo Wireless Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 will operate using the settings you choose in the app on it's own - you can technically just turn your phone off after everything is paired and the unit will apply the trailer brakes as needed all on it's own. Your Apple Car Play will still work when you swap over to the Curt app though so they are compatible with each other.
Once you have all of your settings figured out in the Curt app the only thing you really need access to is the manual override for emergency situations so if you're wanting to use your Apple Car Play I recommend picking up the Manual Override Button # C83HR so you can make your adjustments with your phone and then switch over to music and still have access to the manual override at a moments notice.
