Why Did My Bearings Burn Up

Question:
I recently changed all 4 8k brake assemblies on a trailer. I didnt over tighten the spindle nut I put new ones along with new bearings and seals. When I took the drums off, they were a little rough on the inside, but the customer didnt want to change them. Out of all 4 one of them burned up and flew off with Rim and Tire leaving only the remains of the bearings and spindle nut. What could have caused it? To mention also, they were running with oil not grease. Does that make a difference?

Expert Reply:
When a bearing wears out or burns up it could be because of inadequate lubrication, faulty installation or improper adjustment. For the repair to be successful, you must first determine why the previous bearing failures occurred.
You will need a new hub and drum depending on what your inner and outer bearing number is. Easy Grease Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K has a bolt pattern of 5 on 4-1/2 inches and has an inner bearing # L68149 and outer bearing # L44649.
